Beginners Butt Plugs
Want to explore Anal Play but not sure where to start? A Butt Plug for beginners is a great place to start as you explore and get comfortable. We’ve got some great tips here to start your journey and trust us – it’s great fun!
It’s up to you how far you want to anally explore but Butt Plugs are a great introduction if you want to work up to inserting a dildo, big or small, take a penis or maybe even a fist. There are so many things to explore!

First things first:
- Understand that your anus is a muscle, don’t expect to take anything large the first time. It’s a muscle that you can train over time if you do want to take larger items.
- Listen to your body – pain equals bad. Stop what you’re doing and take a break. Don’t hurt yourself, it’s meant to be fun and enjoyable!
- Take it slow – rush things and you’ll hurt yourself. The anus is a muscle, ease into it – time is your friend!
- Lube! Lots of it. You really can’t use too much lube. They come in lots of different varieties, including numbing and desensitising ones that might be of benefit. We’ll go in to more detail below.
- Prep – keep things clean with a douche or enema before you start.
- Let go of expectations – just enjoy!
Choosing a Butt Plug
Choosing your butt Plug can be daunting, there’s a plethora to choose from in all shapes, sizes, colours and lots with different features.
Our advice is to start small. Don’t be tempted by the larger ones we have!
The rest is up to you though, choose any colour that takes your fancy and any features you want. Vibrating plugs are great for an extra sensation or a Rimming Butt Plug, which mostly vibrate too for an extra feeling… it’s sure to excite!
We also stock Anal Training Sets which include various butt plugs, starting with the smallest you can step up in size as you feel comfortable.

Get ready and Prep
Before Anal Play, we recommend cleaning your anus with an anal douche or enema.
With warm, not hot, water – squirt it into the anus and release it. Repeat this until the water runs clear.
Be careful not to overdo it though. As a beginner, we recommend the bulb douches, they won’t squirt too much in. Too much water can lead to discomfort.
When things are good – stop and leave it for about 30 minutes… there will be some leftover water in there which will you’ll know when want to come out.
How “clean” you are largely depends on your diet. Fibre is good for keeping things clean. Some days though, you might have to accept that anal play isn’t an option. On the same token, don’t be embarrassed if accidents happen – it has to us all.
All set, insert (nearly)!
- We’re almost there but now the fun begins!
- Don’t go straight to it, warm yourself up – foreplay! Solo or with a partner, just play a little first, stimulate yourself and relax.
- Either with a finger, the tip of your plug or a partners tongue (our favourite), stimulate around the anus – it feels great and a great way of loosening the muscles.
- Spend time relaxing and enjoying the foreplay, there is no rush.
- When you feel ready, get the lube and lots of it. Find a comfortable position, probably on your back but you can experiment here. Generously apply to your butt plug, rub some around your anus and get ready.
- Take it slowly – don’t try to ram it all it at once… nice and slow! Breathe in to it, remember the anus is a muscle so the breath really helps!
- Stimulate it, when inserting you can gyrate is gently, it can a bit more sensation and can help to ease it it. If you plug vibrates you can try this too – it’s about exploration, what works and feels good for you!
- When and if (it might not go in full on your first try) you’ve got the butt plug fully inserted it should comfortably stay in by itself. It might feel a bit odd or uncomfortable at first but it generally passes soon. If it’s painful – take it out.
- If it’s a Rimming Butt Plug – switch it on, it’ll feel incredible!
- With the plug in, you can push against it with your fingers for a thrusting sensation – the same effect can be achieved sitting on it. Flex the anus muscles too by squeezing and releasing around the plug. Just go with what feels good!
- Have fun but don’t keep the plug in too long. We don’t recommend longer than 30 minutes at first but you can build up on this time if you want later on.
Remember, its all fun and this is just the start of your anal play!
